For most of us, Christmas can be a magical time of year, with holidays, family gatherings, food, drink and the giving and receiving of gifts. However, it can also be a particularly hard time for those living on our streets.
Spectra employees Jayne and Chris Smy regularly volunteer with the Salvation Army by serving tea, coffee, soup and food to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the local community. For over three years Jayne and Chris have been making regular trips to Norwich City Centre, partaking in ‘The Soup Run’ programme, which includes up to 180 other charitable volunteers.
Jayne said, “For many of these people, winter can prove brutally challenging. The cold weather makes life on the street even more dangerous than usual. Seeing everyone else enjoying togetherness with holiday cheer can create an added sense of isolation”.
Knowing the kindness and generosity of their colleagues, Jayne, and Chris took the opportunity to ask for help to give something back during the season of goodwill. Because of the cold weather, Spectra was on the lookout for donations of second-hand clothing, to help those living on our streets.
Staff response was incredible, in the space of only a few days, Jayne and Chris had accumulated 13 bin bags full of donated jumpers, hats, gloves, scarves, sleeping bags and even duvets. The items were separated accordingly and segregated between Norwich and Lowestoft Salvation Army groups.
Joe Maynard, Managing Director at Spectra, commented, “Yet again our staff have shown that they genuinely care, their generosity never ceases to amaze me. Everyone was eager to help support Jayne and Chris with their fantastic work; it was a tremendous effort from all involved, well done”.
Donations of warm and useful items for those living on our streets are always welcome; however, if you want to get more involved, the Salvation Army will consider applications from volunteers.
